STEALS AND DEALSGo With the Mix!

Los Angeles, December 27 – Now that the holidays are winding down, you may be wondering where the money will come from to buy your next cigar. No worries, bunky, we’re here to help.

Among our favorites as we work on our ranking of value cigars are “mixed fillers.” These are handmade, top-quality brands which use a mix of long, medium and occasionally some short filler in some lines or sizes. Some brands – Arturo Fuente is one – have shapes which use medium filler, shorter pieces than the normal long-fill leaves, but much better than the short filler used mostly for cigarillos.

The tobacco is good, the workmanship is good, but the price is always lower than the long-fill brands. That makes for a potential bargain and we saw some good buys – along with some nice deals on premium long-fillers – in our most recent sweep of the top mail-order and on-line merchants:

Famous Smoke Shop:

> Arturo Fuente Curly Head Deluxe (6 1/2 x 43), made with medium filler, but a pretty good value at $45.95 and a steal at $39.95 for a box of 25.

> Astral Descanso, tubed coronas (5 1/2 x 42), a nice medium-bodied cigar at a value price of just $49.95 for 25 ($2 a stick!).

> Astral Grand Reserve 92 Perfeccion torpedos (7 x 48) in a box of ten for $29.95 instead of the normal $44.95.

> A great deal on the full-bodied Camacho SLR line, all on sale for $99.95 for boxes of 25; the line is normally priced from $109.95 to $138.95.

> Nice savings on 5-packs of the Carlos Torano Signature Collection, now $19.95 in all sizes, but normally $21.95 to $28.95. For $4 each, you can try the elegant Perfectos, a 5-inch by 51-ring beauty!

> Don Diego Corona Majors (5 x 42), nicely reduced to $55.95 from $69.95 for a box of 25.

> La Vieja Habana Cedar Chateau No. 1 (5 1/2 x 44), normally an already-too-low $23.95 for this mixed-fill value brand, now a preposterous $19.95 for 20. A buck a stick for La Viejas!

> Montecristo White “Assortment Tray,” 175 cigars including 25 each of the No. 1 (6 5/8 x 44), No. 2 (6 1/8 x 52), No. 3 (5 1/2 x 44), Churchill (7 x 54) and Court (tubed, 5 1/2 x 44) . . . perfect for when friends are coming!

> Natural, from Drew Estate, with big savings on the Root (5 x 55), down to $99.95 from $126.95 for 24, or you can try a five-pack for just $23.95, a great introduction to this unique brand, full of flavor but also intense and somewhat forbidding!

> The Oliva “O” samplers – either Churchills or Torpedos – is on sale again for $44.95, down from the regular $62.95 price. Both include six each of the Oliva “O” Bold blend and six of the Oliva “O” Maduro, plus a cutter. If you prefer fuller-bodied, stout flavors, this is a brand worth trying and the price is right.

> Partagas Spanish Rosado Rojito (4 1/2 x 50), regularly $178.95, now $149.95 for a box of 40.

Holt’s Cigar Company:
Although Holt’s is best known for its elegant Ashton lines plus the very nice La Aroma de Cuba, Sosa and Peterson brands, it also offers specials on other brands that are too hard to pass up.

Such is the case with their carload approach to six sizes of the mixed-fill La Vieja Habana brand noted in the Famous special above.

Holt’s will not only offer you the Cedar Chateau No. 1 at $19.95, you can buy nearly the entire line at $19.95 the box:

> Belicoso D (6 1/2 x 54), normally $34.00, now $19.95.

> Cedar Chateau No. 1 (5 1/2 x 44), normally $23.00, now $19.95.

> Cedar Chateau No. 2 (5 x 50) normally $26.00, now $19.95.

> Cedar Chateau No. 3 (6 1/2 x 44), normally $26.00, now $19.95.

> Celebration National (7 x 52), normally $34.00, now $19.95.

> Rothchild Luxo (5 1/2 x 52), normally $34.00, now $19.95.

The sale’s on while supplies last, but not beyond Friday for sure.

J-R Cigars:
Maybe you need to redecorate your home, or just install a new bookcase to hold your holiday presents. J-R Cigars has the answer.

It’s the “Barrister Bookcase” and it was designed to hold Lew Rothman’s book-style “Library Edition” cigar boxes with special editions of 16 top brands like Macanudo, Partagas and Montecristo. There were even bases made to host multiple levels of the Barrister Bookcase to create a freestanding wall-unit humidor.

The original deal was that any purchase of a Library Edition box would earn you the right to buy one Barrister Bookcase for $59. If you’ve shopped for furniture – not to mention humidors – that’s a fine deal right there. The bookcase is 31 inches wide, 13 7/8 inches tall and 10 5/8 inches deep, has a dark mahogany-colored finish and a pull-down glass door front.

Now, J-R is offering an extension on last week’s special: a free Barrister Bookcase with the purchase of any box of Romeo y Julieta Aniversario cigars! It also comes with a humidifier and a bottle of the polypropylene glycol mixture you’ll need to keep your cigars humid and happy.

There are five sizes of the RyJ Aniversarios and the price for 25s ranges from $134.95 for Coronas (5 1/2 x 44) to $179.95 for fat Churchills (7 x 54). Well worth the price to start putting together that humidor in the corner to handle all the cigars you received for the holidays. You don’t even need a trip to the Home Depot!
