Los Angeles, January 25 – I promise, we’re close to the finish!

As soon as we completed yesterday’s story on the special Maker’s Mark cigars issued for the 55th Presidential Inauguration last week, here comes a new auction from Famous Smoke Shop and its Cigar Auctioneer site featuring 200 specially-banded Macanudos prepared for the Republican National Convention held last summer in New York.

General Cigar created special boxes of 100 Macanudo Duke of York (5 1/4-inch by 54-ring robustos) with their famous Café wrapper for distribution at events surrounding the Convention. The boxes themselves were elegant, with special handles on each end and were imprinted with the words “Republican National Convention 2004" and “Macanudo Duke of York Café.”

Each of the individual cigars had a double band, with the second band imprinted in red, white, blue and gold with the same words as the box.

Famous is auctioning 200 of these cigars individually, beginning this morning, with an opening bid of $1 and $1 increments. The box will go, at no extra cost, to the individual who bids the largest overall amount for the cigars.

This morning also brings auctions for 40 individual Padron Serie 1926 40th Anniversary cigars (6 1/2 x 54 torpedoes) and a Padron Serie 1926 40th Anniversary humidor (no. 275 of 400). A similar auction was held recently for the cigars and the humidor together that ended with 120 bids (!) and a winning price for one humidor and 40 cigars of $2,055. The fun ends next Monday, January 31 at 10 p.m. Eastern time.

Steals and Deals:
Despite the snow and storms, some of the nation's top cigar vendors are trying to keep you warm and smoky:

Atlantic Cigar:
Our friends at Atlantic are offering nice specials on two different lines:

• Bucanero samplers, including a six-pack that includes both the natural and maduro-wrapped shapes, now $36.17. This is a great way to try the Bucanero line, especially the El Capitan, which we ranked as one of the top 15 medium-bodied cigars available in the U.S.

• La Gloria Cubana Reserva Figurados, the first new shaped cigars from Ernie Perez-Carrillo in 20 years at the lowest prices we have seen yet:

> Flechas Especiales: a 6 1/2-inch by 49-ring perfecto and the best of the line, just $103.95 for a box of 20.

> Piramides Clasicas: a 7 1/4-by- 56 pyramid, now $115.95 for 20.

> Selectos de Lujos: a 7 1/4-by-54 perfecto, now $119.95 for 20.

You can also try a three-pack of the Piramides Clasicas for $22.80.

Cigars International:
Keith Meier’s weekly on-line special is too good to pass up, so here it is: Cuba Aliados Cazadores, a handmade, medium-bodied cigar with short-filler of Churchill size (7 x 46) at 60 cents a stick!

This is a cigar absolutely perfect for the golf course . . . or for shoveling snow. While available, you get 50 cigars (two bundles) for $29.95 through Thursday, January 27 at 9 a.m. Eastern time.
