Plus: a special Valentine’s Day sampler from Famous Smoke ShopLos Angeles, February 11 – It’s nearly Valentine’s Day and in the rush of men buying chocolate, flowers and diamonds for the women in their life, there ought to be at least some women buying cigars for their men! If that’s you – or you want to buy a gift for yourself to salute the day – here are some suggestions with a hint of romance in the blend . . . or at least the title: • No. 5: Havana Honeys Sweet, sweet and sweeter is the blend of Joe Gold’s Dominican-made Havana Honeys line. It’s made with long-filler tobaccos in five sizes in a choice of six flavors, combining good construction and a balanced, lively taste in your choice of blackberry, cherry chocolate, honey, rum or vanilla (see, we got chocolate in there, even in cigars!). It’s available in boxes of 10, up to 50, but for the collector, try the “Honey Pot” of 30! • No. 4: Te-Amo Any cigar named “I Love You” has to make the list. From Mexico with love comes this popular brand, underrated with the influx of higher-profile Dominican, Honduran and Nicaraguan cigars. But Te-Amo combines quality workmanship with stout flavors – especially in the maduro-wrapped shapes – and reasonable prices to make it a favorite all-around the U.S., especially on the golf course. • No. 3: Excalibur 1066 Lancelot The gallant knight of the Round Table represents inspired love which went awry. It’s a big cigar, just like Lancelot’s heart – a double corona of 7 1/4 inches by 54 ring – suitable to salute your sweetheart (unless named Guinevere) or to use for a game of nerfball. It features an exotic Cameroon wrapper and is offered in elegant, all-cedar chests of 20. • No. 2: Heaven “They say in heaven love comes first; we’ll make heaven a place on earth,” from Belinda Carlisle’s 1987 smash Heaven is a Place on Earth sums up why this handmade, flavored cigar earns its place on the list. Unlike many of the machine-made cigars which dominate the flavored market, Heather Phillips and her “angels” offer a quality, handmade cigar which is offered in four sizes and in a blinding array of ten flavors including Angel’s Spice (cinnamon), Cupid’s Cherry Cream, Aphrodite’s Amaretto . . . you get the idea. You can try them in packs of five, or boxes of 10, 25 or 50 depending on the size. • No. 1: Romeo y Julieta Naturally, the brand which salutes the star-crossed lovers of Shakespeare’s 1596 tragedy rank at the top. And for good reason, it’s one of the top-selling brands of cigars in the U.S., having seen a healthy rise in the past three years thanks to its quality of construction, moderate pricing and marvelous, caramelized flavor. We ranked it no. 4 on our list of the top medium-bodied cigars offered on the U.S, market. It also offers perhaps the best gift packaging of all: boxes of 10 cigars in aluminum tubes in the healthy Clemenceau (6 x 50) and Churchill (7 x 50) sizes. Few other gifts will be so welcomed by the smoker . . . or so easy on the wallet! Famous’s Valentine Day Sampler Special The folks at Famous Smoke Shop took up the challenge of putting together a Valentine’s Day sampler and came up with a 12-cigar package (shown above) which – like red roses – features red labels on all of the cigars! All of them are robustos, including Fonseca, Graycliff PG, Kahlua, Partagas, Punch, Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 and more. The package is just $39.95, but the supply is limited. Unlike roses, however, these cigars will not wilt if you put them in your humidor!
