Plus: Heavy auction action on Padron 40th Anniversary and Opus XLos Angeles, March 9 – Covering the ecstacy of a good cigar at a good price and the agony of missed opportunities, this is the wide world of cigars: Abner’s World: From Philadelphia comes two nice brands at nicer prices: • Cuesta-Rey Pyramid No. 9s (6 1/4 inches by 52 ring) in both the Centenario and Centro Fino Sungrown blends, were $46.50, now $39.95 for 10. If you haven’t tried the Centro Fino Sungrowns, here’s a great chance at a good value. It’s the best blend in the Fuente-made Cuesta-Rey line. • Macanudo Gold Label, our no. 2-ranked mild-bodied cigar at the best prices we have seen yet, in boxes of 25: > Duke of York (5 1/4 x 54), now $106.75; > Lord Nelson (7 x 49), now $116.50; > Shakespeare (6 1/2 x 45 torpedo), now $98.95; > Somerset Pyramid (5 x 54), now $102.50; > Tudor (6 x 52), now $111.95. Delicate, balanced and just a bare hint of spice on the finish. If you like milder cigars and don’t want to shell out for Davidoff, the Gold Label is your answer. Atlantic Cigar: Our low-price fiends at Atlantic have added the Felipe Gregorio line (whose band is illustrated above), offering Philip Wynne’s powerful blend at the best prices we have seen for this brand: > Mystic Knights (6 1/2 x 55), in boxes of 25 for $120; > Belicoso (6 1/2 x 54), in boxes of 20 for $96; > Petit Perfecto (5 x 52), in boxes of 20 for $72; > Fat Boy (3 x 55 – a size which must be seen to be believed and a sure show-stopper), in boxes of 20 for just $48. • Gurkha Regent, now in five-packs so you can try this box-pressed, Habana 2000-wrapped beauty at a reasonable price: > Robusto (4 1/2 x 52), five for $32.77, or 20 for $114, the lowest we’ve seen; > Toro (6 x 52), five for $34.50, or 20 for $120, the best we’ve seen; > Torpedo (6 1/2 x 50), five for $35.75. • Gurkha Master’s Select, maybe the best of the line thanks to its full-bodied taste and big perfecto shapes: > Master’s Select Perfecto No. 1 (6 x 60), was $131.25, now $120 for 25; > Master’s Select Perfecto No. 2 (5 x 56), was $128.25, now $114 for 25; > Master’s Select Perfecto No. 3 (4 x 52), was $114.75, now $102 for 25, or > Robusto No. 4 (6 x 50), was $135, now $120 for 25. • Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra, offered in a sampler of eight for $21.99, a great way to try this increasingly-popular blend. J-R Cigars: Beyond his insane sale of H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon jars for little more than he paid for them, Lew Rothman and his team have other items to tantalize you: • Cohiba Coronas (5 1/8 x 42), never on sale, but offered in a nice sampler of five for $30. • Helix x652 (6 x 52), our no. 3-ranked mild cigar in the preferred natural wrapper in a super-sampler of five for $9.75. Yippee! If you have not tried this mild, gentle blend, you must shell out a Hamilton for this sampler, please! • La Unica No. 200 (7 x 49), a unique cigar made by the Tabacalera A. Fuente for the J.C. Newman Cigar Co., rarely on special, now five for $12.75. A terrific way to try one of the first premium brands to be designed as a value-packed bundle cigar. • Montesino Gran Corona (6 3/4 x 48), an underrated value cigar from Fuente, five for $12.75, but note also the Napolean Grand size (7 1/2 x 46), offered five for an impossible $6.75! • Sancho Panza Double Maduro Cervantes (6 1/2 x 48), five for $11.25. Hammer Time: Another box of 40 Padron Serie 1926 40th Anniversary cigars has popped up on eBay, with the auction ending today at 11:40 Eastern time. It’s for a full box of 40 of the 40th Anniversary torpedoes and the special, carved-top humidor. The New York-based, first-time seller has posted a starting price of $1,900, apparently without any higher reserve and there is one buyer, also a first-timer on eBay. If sold at that price, it would be $47.50 per cigar without any consideration for the humidor. The retail value of the cigars and the humidor together is $1,600. Another seller is offering single 40th Anniversary cigars and has bids up to $33 each with the offer ending at 12:09 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday. Meanwhile, an Oklahoma City seller has a full box of the Fuente Fuente Opus X Fuente Fuente size (how’s that for a shape name!) with 32 cigars up with the auction ending Friday at 9:09 p.m. Eastern time. The cigars are 5 5/8 inches by 46 ring and the opening bid is $550, but there is a “Buy It Now” option for $640 or $20 per stick. It today’s overheated auction frenzy, it seems almost reasonable . . . ~ Rich Perelman
