SPECIAL OPUS X COLLECTION ON THE AUCTION BLOCKPlus: New Dominican-made Culebras and Perdomo Reserve line gets shades

Los Angeles, March 28 – Although it’s been on the U.S. marketplace for barely 10 years, the Fuente Fuente Opus X line has already achieved a high profile and is one of the most sought-after cigars on the U.S. market.

Following the enormous overall success of the Fuente cigar enterprise, a special box of fairly odd Opus X sizes was produced to raise money for the CigarFamily Charitable Foundation, a project of the Tabacalera A. Fuente and their U.S. distributor, the J.C. Newman Cigar Co.

The box of 22 cigars (and 13 shapes) was offered in individual cardboard sleeves for $750.00, mostly through Mike’s Cigars and Holt’s Cigar Co..

But one has come up on eBay, with the auction ending today just after 5 p.m. Pacific time. So far, the box has drawn nine bids and sits at $713.35, but will no doubt go higher.

Speaking of high, the two magnificent 19th Century cigar holders both went for big prices on eBay. The red-clad burl mechanical holder with the lion’s head on the front (shown above) went for $1,101.50 after not drawing any interest last November at $499.99.

Even more impressive was the sterling silver Tiffany cigar holder, complete with cherubs, made in New York in the 1860s, which drew three bids at or above the starting bid of $5,999.99. The final price is not yet available as the auction was concluded privately.

Bolivar's Twist & Shout:
We noticed an unusual entry on one of the many price lists we check weekly: a new Culebras from Bolivar!

This is the unusual three cigars-in-one shape in which three fairly thin cigars are intertwined into one package. It’s certainly not a big seller, so very few brands include it. Among U.S.-marketed brands, only six have a culebras shape:

Handmade:
> Davidoff (Dominican Republic)
> La Flor Dominicana (Dominican Republic)
> Medina (United States)
> Natural (Nicaragua)
> Quisqueyana (Dominican Republic)

Machine-made:
> Villiger (Germany)

Now General Cigar joins the party with a culebras – which means “snake” in Spanish – using three 6 1/8-inch by 40-ring cigars for the shape. So far, it’s offered by J-R Cigars at $5 a copy.

Remember Timbuk 3?
In 1986, a husband-and-wife band from Madison, Wisconsin called themselves Timbuk 3 and had a top-25 hit with “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades.”

It might be one of Nick Perdomo’s favorites, because his Tabacalera Perdomo has now introduced cellophane sleeves for its La Tradicion Cabinet Series Perdomo Reserve line that are slightly darkened instead of the traditional clear sleeves.

The new sleeves are proprietary and are called “CelloSHADE.” The design goal is to protect cigars from ultraviolet light damage in open storage conditions, as in some smokeshop display or walk-in humidors.

It’s also going to make consumers pull out their reading glasses to figure out which version of Perdomo Reserve they’re looking at. Remember that this line has three different wrappers: a Nicaraguan-grown “Cuban Café” line with a white label, a Cameroon wrapper with a silver label and a Nicaraguan-grown maduro wrapper with a red label. You might want to bring a flashlight as well.
