Plus: Grand Havana Room may expand to FloridaLos Angeles, March 30 – With the National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO) show underway in Las Vegas, we found some nice opportunities for smokers looking for value: Atlantic Cigar: Interesting deals on some excellent lines that aren’t as high-profile as perhaps they should be: • Bahia B-Line No. 2 (5 inches by 52 ring) from Tony Borhani, with lots of flavor and a smooth Ecuadorian-grown wrapper; a box of 20 is now just $27.50. • Camacho Limited Sampler, a wonderful way to try four of Caribe Imported Cigar’s hard-to-find specialties for $24.50: > Face-Off by Christian Eiroa, a 5 3/4-inch by 50-ring robusto made by Eiroa from the tobacco used for Litto Gomez’s La Flor Dominicana brand. > Camacho Corojo 11/18, a heavy-duty 6-inch by 54-ring perfecto. > Camacho Corojo Monarch (5 x 50) offered with a rarely-seen maduro wrapper. > Camacho Special Limited Reserve Maduro Rothschild (4 1/2 x 50), the only size of that line offered with a maduro wrapper. It’s a great way to try these tastes; if the assortment only included the Camacho Liberty 12th Amendment, it would be perfect! • Heaven Torpedo Vanilla (6 x 50), was $53.95, now $51.18, an inexpensive way to try a handmade, long-filler, flavored cigar. • La Perla Habana’s Black Pearl Rojo Toro (6 x 50), an underrated, flavorful cigar offered in a sampler pack of five for just $14.50. Doug Wood and his La Perla Habana team have also created souvenir three-pack samplers of their Black Pearl Maduro, La Perla Habana Classic and Black Pearl Conga series – all in the 6 x 50 toro size – with a special telescoping case – for $12.95. Mike’s Cigars: No blockbusters from Oscar Boruchin this week, but a really nice deal on those classy Altadis tins, this time for the Trinidad brand: > Belicoso (6 1/8 x 52), tin of three was $29.95, now $18. > Corona (5 x 44), tin of four was $23.95, now $16. > Mini Belicoso (5 x 52), tin of three was $24.95, now $15. > Robusto (5 x 50), tin of four was $29, now $17. > Toro (6 x 50), tin of three was $22, now $13.50. The Toro is our favorite deal of this bunch and the prices are the lowest we’ve seen recently for this very nice cigar, which we have ranked among the top 30 full-bodied cigars on the U.S. market. Grand Havana may get grander: Grand Havana Enterprises announced that it may enter into a licensing deal to create a third Grand Havana Room in Miami, Florida. The new Grand Havana Room would be operated by a third party, which was unnamed in the company’s announcement. Moreover, in order for the license agreement to go through, a “definitive lease” must be in place by May 23, 2005. After years of losses, Grand Havana posted its first-ever profit in 2004. It operates smoking clubs in New York and Los Angeles. A Washington, D.C. location closed several years ago. With increasing restrictions on smoking, some observers believe the future for smoking clubs is bright as most anti-smoking laws carve out exceptions for private smoking lounges, or lounges attached to retail tobacco stores. From the Cubador: The latest line from Cuban President Fidel Castro, speaking to the island’s impoverished status where cooking oil, soap and toothpaste are hard to find: “We have been making tremendous efforts to deliver an economic and social counterpunch in the face of imperialistic efforts to suffocate and liquidate us.” Comment: name-calling is nice. How about a Wal-Mart? ~ Rich Perelman
