Plus: Hurricane Katrina help from Alec Bradley Cigar Co.Los Angeles, September 12 – The tremendous popularity of Club Macanudo in New York meant it was only a matter of time before additional outlets were opened. But in a football stadium? But Club Macanudo at FedEx Field – the 91,665-seat home of the Washington Redskins in Landover, Maryland – opened yesterday for the season opener against Chicago. It was a happy day as the Redskins edged the Bears, 9-7. The stadium, opened in 1997, might have more branded fan amenities and attractions than just about any other in the world for its premium seat holders on the Club, Field Club, Loge, Owner’s Club or Suite levels. On the Club Level con course, you can find: • Two Internet Cafes; • Two Bloody Mary bars; • A Wild Goose Landing patio bar; • A full-service sports bar, adjoined by a Hooters at FedEx Field, and now • Club Macanudo at FedEx Field behind sections 306-308. Formerly called “The Humidor Cigar Bar,” the space is operated by Old Virginia Tobacco, now in conjunction with General Cigar. It’s 4,300 square feet of leather armchairs and flat-screen monitors and video walls for football fans, plus a 100-foot-long granite-topped bar seating 75. All told, about 350 guests can fill the Club at any one time. FedEx Field is remarkably friendly to smokers, prohibiting it in the seating areas, tunnels and restrooms, but allowing smoking on the open-air concourses, on the Wild Goose Landing patio, on special smoking decks on top of the elevator towers overlooking the field at Gates A and E and, of course, in Club Macanudo. Plus, suite owners can determine the smoking policy for their own suite! Of course, Redskins premium-ticket holders expect such luxuries with seats costing from $2,350 to $3,900 each on a season basis for 10 games (including two pre-season matches). Although it opened yesterday and will serve fans at the October 2 game against Seattle, the formal opening of the facility will come on October 23, when Washington hosts the San Francisco 49ers. Be a Medalist for Hurricane Katrina relief: The Alec Bradley Cigar Company, headquartered in Dania, Florida, will donate 10% of the net proceeds from sales of its top-end Medalist by Alec Bradley line from September 1 through the end of the year. Offered in boxes of 10, the Medalist by Alec Bradley series is offered in four sizes at quite reasonable prices of $52.50 to $59.50 in Cuban-style presentation boxes. With a medium-to-full body and a Costa Rican-grown wrapper, it’s easy to enjoy and help Katrina victims at the same time. Said Alec Bradley president Alan Rubin, “Our dedicated Alec Bradley retailers who encourage the purchase of Medalist by Alec Bradley cigars, the smokers who buy them and the cigar media who publicize the program are equal partners in this charity effort.” Good news from New Orleans: There’s been no answer at Payless Cigars, the New Orleans-based retailer, but a note was finally posted on their website last week saying in part, ”Please now we are doing everything we can to get back ‘up and running.’ We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding and continued support. We will be e-mailing all our customers as soon as we are back online.” That’s good news to see a heartbeat from Bob Winston and his team. Our thoughts are with you. Surf’s Up! We reported on the re-emergence of the cigar dinner, notably at Sandcastle Stadium in Atlantic City, New Jersey for the Atlantic League’s Atlantic City Surf. The first dinner sold out quickly, so the Surf are organizing another on September 23 for the Surf’s game against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Now, the program includes plenty of barbeque, ice cream sandwiches, five different beers and four cigars for every attendee, courtesy of Smokin’ Butt Cigar Co.: C.A.O. Gold, Carlos Torano Exodus 1959 Silver Series, Cusano Corojo ‘97 and Trilogy Cameroon. All for $60 with a club seat for the game; the dinner is open for 90 minutes after the first pitch! Call (609) 344-7873 for tickets! C.A.O. swag going uptown: We’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: is there any event C.A.O. won’t sponsor? Chief Marketing Officer Jon Huber’s relentless drive to put C.A.O. everywhere continues with their merchandise line, C.A.O. M.E.R.C.H. being included in attendee gift bags for the upcoming U.S.-China business summit Tuesday and Wednesday in New York. No mention of cigars, but C.A.O.’s line includes hats, t-shirts and even soccer balls themed for C.A.O.’s Brazilia and Italia cigar lines! Having the items exposed to a top-end business audience is a creative use of gift items – “swag” in the trade – to raise the C.A.O. profile. Smart work, Jon. ~ Rich Perelman
