FOUR LITTLE INDIANSPlus: JM Tobacco has your daily cigar?

Los Angeles, September 6 – Unlike your favorite smokeshop, which proudly displays a massive, carved Indian at or near its door, you may not have space for a 500-pound statue at home.

That’s where the folks at J.C. Newman can help.

They’ve introduced a series of hand-painted Cigar Store Indians from 14 inches in height up to 36 inches that you can find a place for. All four feature traditional styling, with the chief holding an open box of Cuesta Rey Centro Fino Sungrown (wooden) cigars.

The 36-inch-high “Sungrown” model and the 24-inch-high Captiva models show the chief standing upright, while the 30-inch-high “Sumatra” and 14-inch-high “Centro Fino” statues show the chief in a kneeling position.

They’re also quite reasonably priced. The 36-inch-tall “Sungrown” model is the most expensive at $279.95, with the “Sumatra” at $249.95, “Captiva” at $149.95 and the 14-inch-high “Centro Fino” at just $99.95.

Each model let you show off your interest in cigars . . . without losing a big chunk of your entryway or smoking room to a full-sized Indian.

It’s September and taxes on back on the agenda:
With Congress returning and the authorization of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) expiring on September 30 is near the forefront of the legislative agenda.

The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed differing bills on the program, both of which provided most of the funding by increasing Federal taxes on tobacco. In the case of cigars, the current five-cent per cigar tax would increase to $1 (House) or $3 (Senate). In addition, the Senate bill has a floor tax that could destroy a significant number of tobacconists by itself.

The Cigar Association of America, representing manufacturers and distributors, has been at the forefront of the lobbying effort with the Congress. It now has a comprehensive website that offers not only information about the bills, but an opportunity for every smoker to send a message to their House or Senate representative.

All smokers are encouraged to voice their opposition to these taxes, but only to their own Representative or Senator, as elected officials essentially pay attention only to their own constituents.

JM’s daily cigar prescription:
Lots of brands would like to have you make them your regular cigar.

But only JM Tobacco has a suggested seven-day rotation of its cigars so you’ll have the right smoke for every day:

• For Monday (a City construction meeting): JM’s Dominican Belicoso Connecticut. • For Tuesday (Poker Night with the boys): JM’s Dominican Gordo Maduro.

• For Wednesday (deliveries across town): JM’s Dominican Gordo Grande Sumatra.

• For Thursday (18-hole round of golf): JM’s Dominican Toro Sumatra.

• For Friday (family BBQ): JM’s Dominican Churchill Maduro.

• For Saturday (all-day fishing trip): JM’s Dominican Corona Sumatra.

• For Sunday (at home): JM’s Dominican Robusto Connecticut.

The JM’s series offers a variety of sizes of value-priced cigars in your choice – as listed above – of Connecticut, Sumatra or Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrappers, The prices will make you smile . . . and make it more than possible to implement the JM seven-day plan!

Appellate Court throws San Diego hotel deal into chaos
A California appellate court ruled in favor of San Diego’s City Centre Development Corporation (CCDC) in its action against Ahmad Mesdaq and his former Gran Havana cigar and coffee lounge in the city’s fashionable Gaslamp District, possibly causing additional delays in the tumultuous eminent domain case.

Mesdaq had won a $9 million judgement against the CCDC, who condemned his 5,000 sq. ft. plot and the store in order to give it to a developer to build a 334-room Marriott Renaissance hotel on the site. The appeals court quibbled with the amount of the award, as the CCDC valued the land at $4 million.

However, between the time of the award and the latest court decision, Mesdaq came to an agreement with the developer for a final settlement of $7.8 million that still has to be approved by the CCDC.

Although the head of the agency indicated that it would try to get the award adjusted, another member of the CCDC told the San Diego Union-Tribune that if Mesdaq and the developer want to complete their agreement, “I’m not sure we would object. That’s something we have to talk about. Our objective is to get the hotel built.” Mesdaq’s 5,000 sq. ft. space along with the surrounding 35,000 sq. ft. being held for the hotel is currently in use as a parking lot.

The developer, GRH L.L.C., is well behind on the project and made the deal with Mesdaq to try and get the hotel underway. GRH’s attorney has said that the company has invested $23 million in the project to date and wants to pay Mesdaq the $7.8 million it agreed to in July in order to get going.
